Bible Study: Genesis
“This is now bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called ‘woman,’
for she was taken out of man.”
Genesis 2:23
Reading the Bible, but sometimes unsure what to derive from the stories? Here are some simple lessons from Genesis:
God can do all things
Divine mysteries are real
God is the source of everything and has dominion over everything
God is eternal and unchanging
God was before the beginning
The sacrifice of Jesus was ordained before the world was even formed (1 Peter 1:20)
God works through the wisdom of the cross (1 Cor. 2:7)
Angels existed before the material world (Job 38:7)
Ask: God, what should I learn about you from this passage?
The Gospel is veiled to those who do not have the light of Jesus shining on them (2 Cor. 4:3-6)
God said let there be light and there was - the first instance of God’s word being a living word
God is not part of nature; nature is not to be worshipped
Nothing is purposeless
God proclaims that we are good and then spends the rest of the Bible pursuing us
God gives us plenty
The sabbath shows God can sanctify time, and man still has value even when not working
Our origin is dust as a reminder to prepare for death through repentance
To mature, a man must leave home and bond with one woman
No man goes to Jesus unless the Father brings him
Evil and suffering were not brought about by God but by man’s disobedience, forfeiting the original holiness, justice, and communion with God
Both Eve and the snake misquote God, one who adds to God’s words and detracts from them
Mother Mary is the new Eve. Jesus refers to her as “woman” on several occasions to draw this parallel.
Fear is not a feeling, but a lack of faith
We flee when we sin b/c we inherently know God’s justice
God promises that the offspring of the woman would defeat Satan, foreshadowing Jesus
Adam is cursed by the thorns; Jesus wears a crown of thorns
A perfect world would have God’s presence, but God cannot be around the unholy, so He sent His son (in flesh), and the only way to Him is through His son
Self-control, not self-esteem, is the greatest achievement we can attain
God is more concerned with the quality of your heart than the quality of what you have to offer
Side with God against your flesh and sin instead of with your flesh and sin against God
Marital union of husband and wife serves as a sacred bond through which God creates children in his image
God is the one who decides who enters into His salvation, and not
Offer to God something that costs you
God promises a new name and life to every believer
Trust God always
Expect to be tested - that’s how we grow in faith
Meditate on God’s word and obey His will
Shared faith and values matter in marriage
Parents emphasize your child’s goodness
Singles look for goodness in a spouse
Love is not a precondition for marriage
We need God’s grace for everything
God is interested in your problems - nothing is too small for Him
God keeps his promises
God can use all things and anything for good
Run from temptation
We are on God’s timetable
Do all you can, leave the rest to God
God’s ways are not like our ways
God chooses us for spiritual reasons
Be like a child
God forgives and forgets, even when we can’t, so focus on Him and move on
The Lord gives back our wasted years (time without Him, time sinning)
Never be discouraged by how great the Church looks compared to the evil of the world (God says nothing can destroy the church)
Believe God and believe in God
Genesis shows us the who and why of creation, not the how
Genesis is a systematic attack and correction of pegan creation stories
Male and female were created distinct, but with equal dignity
A man’s vocation is what he does and how he worships God
