3 Tips for Singing Well
People are afraid to sing. But that fear is only vanity in vocal form.
Anyone can sing. If you can hold a tone while vocalizing a vowel (which everyone can do), you can sing.
It’s never a question of whether you can sing. You can.
Here are three tips for singing well:
Breathe in, and as you do, bring your hand up to your mouth, as if you are taking a sip of water. Feel how the back of your throat opens up? As you sing, keep the palette (back of the throat) soft as if you are getting another sip. Notice, too, how the air feels cooler when you breathe in this position. That’s how you know you are doing it correctly.
Stand up tall with your shoulders relaxed. The upper body does not need to move when taking a breath. Expand the belly instead.
Breathe through your nose. Notice how it’s a deeper and slower breath? Breathe through your mouth. Notice how it is a shallow, quick breath? When singing, it is better to have a well-managed shallow breath than a deep breath. By using tip #1 and breathing as if taking a sip of water, you will have more air overall. The key is to breathe in and use it immediately. Never stop the breath. Keep everything fluid and flowing like ocean waves.
By using these three tips, you may not hear a big difference in your voice, but ask someone else to listen, and they will notice a bigger, more open sound.
With your voice, worship God. Practice humility and offer any wrong notes or “ugly” sounds to Him as penance. Offer the “beautiful” notes as praise!
